Video Chat Negotiating Your Worth
Video Chat Negotiating Your WorthVideo Chat Negotiating Your WorthA follow-up on some of the most popular questions asked during Ladders spreecast on negotiation.A big thank you to everyone who attended our interactive video chat on Negotiating Your Worth. I had a great time and I hope you did too Click on the following links to view the entire spreecast and to obtain a copy of a presentation I created on the topic for Ladders Job Central event. Below are some of the questions I fielded and links to mora information on the topics. As always, you can learn more about the job search and find out about our upcoming spreecasts by following me at JobSearchAmanda on Twitter and liking my Facebook page. Now on to the questionsI just got an offer today, but I want more than was initially offered how do I start negotiating salary?Use resources like Salary.com, PayScale andour competitive analysis tool, Ladders Scout to determine the average compensation range for the role youre vying for, taki ng into account the location, industry, and company size. Then you can confidently say, Based on my research, this role typically pays between $55,000 and $68,000. Im looking for a number closer to the $60,000 mark. Is this open for negotiation? What do I put in the salary requirement section of an online application? If youre allowed to enter a non-numeric answer, type in negotiable or open to negotiation. If you must enter a numeric value for your salary requirements, donotput in 0. Recruiters know that entering 0 is the same as dodging the question and you risk the chance of being weeded out of the application pile. Instead, identify the average compensation range for the role youre interested in and choose a number towards the lower end of your range. Remember, this is just a starting off number for negotiations. The goal is to get your foot through the door for an interview so that you can find out if its the right punkt for you. If the job is a good fit and the company wants to o ffer you the role, then you are in a good position to negotiate for a large compensation plan. What do I do when they ask for salary requirements? The first rule of salary negotiation is to avoid discussing numbers until the company has extended an offer. This is when you have the most power to negotiate. But as any job seeker will tell you, this is no simple feat. Recruiters typically try to pull this information out of you as early as the initial phone screen, if they didnt already request your salary requirements as part of the application process. Here are a couple phrases you can use (courtesy of Jack Chapman, author of the book How to Make $1000 a Minute ) to deflect questions about your salary requirementsIm sure we can come to a good salary agreement if Im the right person for the job, so lets first agree on whether I am.I have some idea of the market, but for a moment lets start with your range. What do you have budgeted for the position? You can try to deflect the questions up front once, maybe twice, but if the recruiter is insistent, youll need to be prepared with some figures.Click on the following link for more information on responding to salary requirement inquiries.

Modern Applications of Tribology
Modern Applications of Tribology Modern Applications of Tribology While Leonardo da Vinci commented on the effects of friction in the 1400s, it wasnt until the mid-1960s that tribology was coined by Dr. H. Peter Jost and accepted as the term for the study and application of the principles of friction, lubrication, and wear.In the early 1960s, there was a dramatic increase in the reported failures of plant and machinery due to wear and associated causes, some causing heavy financial losses. Continuous processes made machinery breakdowns mora costly and serious than ever. This trend was recognized by specialists involved in the subjects of friction, wear, and lubrication, and several research studies reported on the impact of wear, corrosion, and friction on machinery, manufacturing productivity, and costs. As a result, tribology became a mainstream field of science, and many universities offer it as part of their mechanical engineering department curriculum. The early focus of tribology was on improving operation and extending the lifecycle of industrial machinery. Today, those principles and design benefits are making a major impact in a variety of modern applications, such as biomedical, nanotechnology, alternative energies, and green methodologies. Here are some examples.Biomedical (Biotribology)The application of tribology in biological systems is a rapidly growing field and extends well beyond the conventional boundaries. Biomedical tribological systems involve an extensive range of synthetic materials and natural tissues, including cartilage, blood vessels, heart, tendons, ligaments, and skin. These materials operate in complex interactive biological environments. Biotribologists incorporate concepts of friction, wear, and lubrication of these biological surfaces in various applications, such as the design of joints and prosthetic devices, the wear of screws and plates in bone fracture repair, wear of denture and restorative materials, wear of replacement hea rt valves, and even the tribology of contact lenses.NanotribologyThe commercialization of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)/nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), such as disk drives and other magnetic storage systems in the early 1990s, along with the development of new materials with nanoscale thicknesses, have presented new tribological challenges. The emergence of sophisticated scanning probe technologies and computational techniques has given rise to the field of nanotribology for investigations of processes at the atomic, molecular, andmicroscopic scale. Nanotribological studies are helping to develop fundamental understanding of surface interfaces in micro/nanostructures used in a variety of modern applications. Some of these applications include chemical and biodetectors, advanced drug delivery systems, information recording layers, molecular sieves, systems on a chip, nanoparticle reinforced materials, and a new generation of lasers.Wind TurbinesWind turbines continue to ho ld promise as a viable alternative energy source. While they have made gains in reliability in the past decade, they are subject to tribological problems that are difficult and costly to repair and can drastically reduce their expected lifecycles. Two key areas of concern are reliability of gearboxes and turbine lubrication. To address these problems, there have been extensive studies of lubricants, which are used in wind-turbine gearboxes, hydraulic systems such as the blade pitch control, drive train brake subsystems, and bearings, to improve turbine reliability in extreme environments.Green TribologyThe concept of green tribology was also introduced by Jost, who defined it as, The science and technology of the tribological aspects of ecological balance and of environmental and biological impacts. There are a number of problems that can be addressed by green tribology. The specific field of green or environment-friendly tribology emphasizes the aspects of interacting surfaces in rel ative motion, which are of importance for energy or environmental sustainability or which have impact upon todays environment.Nosonovsky and Bhushan suggested the 12 principles of green tribology as the minimization of (1) friction and (2) wear, (3) the reduction or complete elimination of lubrication, including self-lubrication, (4) natural and (5) biodegradable lubrication, (6) using sustainable chemistry and engineering principles, (7) biomimetic approaches, (8) surface texturing, (9) environmental implications of coatings, (10) real-time monitoring, (11) design for degradation, and (12) sustainable energy applications. They further emphasized three areas of green tribology (1) biomimetics for tribological applications, (2) environment-friendly lubrication, and (3) the tribology of renewable-energy application.Tom Ricci is the owner of Ricci Communications. In the early 1960s, there was a dramatic increase in the reported failures of plant and machinery due to wear and associated c auses, some causing heavy financial losses.

Sample Internship Interview Questions
Sample Internship vorstellungsgesprch QuestionsSample Internship Interview QuestionsAs you prepare for your internship interview, be ready to address your key skills and accomplishments that you have listed on your resume. You will want to not only know your resume well but be able to speak about it and tell stories that will illustrate your strengths and let the organization know what you have to offer them as a potential new employee (which could very well happen if you excel at your internship). In an interview, you will want to start and end strong. It only takes 60 seconds to make a positive first impression so starting off strong is crucial to having a successful interview. At the end of an interview, you want to make yourself a memorable candidate by also leaving on a strong note. In these two instances, its important to take the lead with a strong handshake, a smile, and thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you. Ive listed some of the standard interview ques tions that are generally asked below along with more specific and behavioral questions as well. General Interview Questions Tell me a little bit about yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What accomplishments are you most proud of?Do you work better under pressure or with time to plan and organize? Why are you interested in this internship? Why should we consider you for this internship? What do you know about this industry/company?How would your faculty/friends/co-workers describe you? What three words would you choose to best describe yourself? Why did you choose your major? Behavioral Interview Questions Give an example of how youve dealt with a conflict with another person.Tell me a story either personal or professional that paints a picture of you.Describe a situation where your judgment proved to be an invaluable contribution to a team. How do you handle meeting tight deadlines?Give an example of how you set goals and achieve them. What do you do when your schedule is interrupted? Give an example of how you handle this.Give an example of how you work on a team. Can you remember a time when you handled a difficult situation with another student or co-worker? What did you do? Share an example of how youve been able to motivate team members.Describe how you would handle a difficult relationship that you felt was holding you back on the job. When interviewing for an internship, candidates should not only be prepared to answer questions similar to those above but will also want to be prepared for questions that are less conventional than those that are normally asked. For example, interviewers sometimes will ask questions where the answer doesnt matter. In these types of questions, the interviewer is looking to see the interviewee thought process rather than a specific answer. For example, how many chocolate chip cookies would it take to go from the Empire State Building to Central Park? Or, if you were producing a movie who would be your main acto rs and what roles would they play? As youve probably figured out, there is no right answer to either of these questions, so theres no sense in getting flustered if you think youve answered these questions incorrectly. The key is to remain composed and confident and quickly move on to the next question. Tricky interview questions may be asked to see how much you know about the company culture as well as what are your personal values? Although you dont want to change who you are when answering interview questions, you will want to do due diligence when researching the company before your interview and be thoughtful to your answers when answering questions that portray your personal value system, i.e., favorite musical artist, favorite movie, favorite TV show, or even favorite video game or social networking site. The answers you provide to these questions could help the interviewer decide if you are a good fit for the company.

Connected despite distance higher education degrees online Connected despite distance higher education degrees onlinePosted October 13, 2011, by Louisa Veidelis Didnt get the grades you needed to get into your course? Are you an employee wanting to study but cant get time off work? Or are you living internationally and looking to study for an Australian degree? At Open Universities Australia (OUA) you can graduate with a degree from an Australian university as if you had studied on-campus. OUA offers 900 units and 60 qualifications at vocational, undergraduate and postgraduate levels from 15 leading universities and other tertiary providers in Australia through online and distance education. OUA has become Australias largest online and distance university education service provider as more and more students discover the convenience and flexibility that it offers. Units offered by OUA are conducted primarily online so students can study in their own time and work around other jobs and personal commitments. These qualifications are open entry, so acceptance is guaranteed even if students dont get the academic grades required to apply directly to the university. What about the cost? All Australians are entitled to FEE-HELP, the Commonwealth scheme which is an interest-free government loan for up to $83 313 over a students lifetime. As students, you can repay the loan through the taxation system once your income exceeds the minimum threshold. When you study by distance, you will have plenty of academic support from OUA and the hosting university. OUA is committed to assisting students overcome the traditional barriers to university education. We set up a support network to compensate for the face-to-face interaction that people studying by distance miss out on. OUAs support staff deal with everything that we offer and there are also support staff at each particular university that just handle OUA students, says OUA Student Advisor Blake Roberts. And studying by dis tance doesnt mean you miss out on interaction with other students. There are general discussion boards on the OUA website and also boards for most individual subjects, and even live messaging, so you can have direct contact with other students, says Roberts.
